Webinar Recap: Strengthening Governance

Habitat for Humanity | Latin America & Caribbean (LAC)

Keynote Speaker: Mary Cameron, Former President, International Board of Directors

Executive Summary

This webinar focused on leadership, succession, and performance strategies for National Board Directors across the LAC region. Featuring Mary Cameron, the session provided a roadmap for transitioning boards from reactive oversight to strategic partnerships. With over 45 attendees from countries including Honduras, Paraguay, Mexico, and El Salvador, the discussion centered on the HOFI framework and the cultural shifts necessary for organizational excellence.

Core Governance Principles

  • Mary Cameron outlined the foundational elementsof a high-functioning board, emphasizing that governance is a support function designed to empower management:
  • Strategic Alignment: Boards must align with management on the organization’s core purpose while respecting the boundary between oversight and operations.
  • The “Support” Mindset: Rather than seeking “gotcha” moments, effective boards focus on motivating the management team and creating an environment where staff can excel.
  • Self-Awareness: Directors must remain mindful of the time and resources their requests consume, ensuring they add value without creating administrative burdens.

The Effective Director: Qualities & Frameworks

To build a “Great Board,” Mary identified four indispensable character traits for directors:

  • Wisdom: To provide sound judgment.
  • Curiosity: To ask the right questions.
  • Humility: To put the mission before personal glory.
  • Courage: To engage in healthy conflict and dissent.

The HOFI Framework

Boards add value by balancing four perspectives:

  • Hindsight: Reviewing past performance.
  • Oversight: Ensuring accountability and compliance.
  • Foresight: Identifying future opportunities and risks.
  • Insight: Providing unique expertise to solve complex problems.

Strategic Board Management

Effective governance requires a shift in how meetings and agendas are structured:

  • Flipping the Agenda: Prioritize the most critical strategic issues at the start of the meeting.
  • Preparation over Presentation: Board members should arrive fully briefed. Meetings should be reserved for meaningful dialogue and decision-making rather than passive listening.
  • Rules of Engagement: Establish clear expectations regarding attendance, preparation, and communication to foster a culture of professional accountability.

Succession, Onboarding, and Trust

Building a sustainable board requires intentional planning and a focus on relationship-building:

  • Competency-Based Recruiting: Move away from general qualifications; instead, recruit for specific skills and diverse perspectives that fill current gaps.
  • Robust Onboarding: New members need a deep dive into Habitat’s complexities and mission to be effective contributors from day one.
  • Building Trust: Trust is built through the “4 Cs”: Consistency, Communication, Caring, and Competence. Social events and highlighting individual member expertise can help bridge the gap between the board and management.
  • Continuous Evaluation: Regular board evaluations should focus on continuous improvement rather than a static “scorecard.”

Conclusion: Engagement and Impact

The session concluded with actionable advice on keeping members engaged:

  • Ownership: Give every member a specific responsibility so they feel their contribution is vital.
  • Fundraising: Set clear expectations regarding financial support and outreach roles.
  • Efficiency: Keep board packages concise and meetings focused. A strong board should complement strong management, maintaining clear boundaries while working toward a shared vision of safe and decent housing for all.
